4: Affective Literacy
Why do feelings matter? Why does talking about our feelings help us cope with stress and adversity as well as help us enjoy our friends, family and experiences? We used Worry Dolls as an example of how children can relieve anxiety by talking about their feelings - why does this work? Did you know there are some 3000 words to describe your feelings? How many feelings can you name? How is affective literacy taught in school and used in the process of rehabilitation? These are some of the qestions that Paul Ochman, MS, LPC & John Fossella helped lead a discussion on during session 4. Surprisingly, there are a few basic brain mechanisms that provide insight into why 'talking' about feelings and 'labelling' feelings have a physiologic effect of reducing stress and anxiety. We discussed these and also some of the evolutionary evidence that humans can successfully manage emotions by using abstract symbols.
